7th Regiment Basic Camp improve leadership skills during the Squad Operation

FORT KNOX, Ky. –  Cadets from Basic Camp (Cadet Initial Entry Training), 7th Regiment, Alpha Company, finished Squad Operation Training July 26.

The Squad Operation Training is for Cadets to work together as cohesive units to go through different lanes and defeat enemy forces on the field.

Lt. Col. Johnathan Rastall, Professor of Military Science at Northern Michigan University and Company Training Officer at Cadet Summer Training, oversaw the Squad Operation Training.

“The focus today will be on building blocks – how to do squad formations, how to conduct and attack, how to conduct and ambush, how to react with contact. These are basic building blocks that squads need to do in order to be successful,” Rastall said.

Cdt. Maxwell Miller, Citadel Military College of South Carolina and a squad leader for Alpha Company, established his squad and led planning on how to get to their objective and eliminate the enemies.

“The biggest challenge is that lot of Cadets have never done these things before and we have to work with people that we still try to get to know,” Miller said.

“This training helps Cadets to improve their decision making, and improve leadership skills of how to control small imminence,” Rastall said. “What I want my Cadets to learn is how they are thinking, how they are going about learning these tasks and applying those tasks, are they working together as a team, are they thinking about the new, motivated way to solve problems.”

Cdt. Eden Livingston, Washington University in St. Louis and also platoon leader in Alpha Company, managed tasks and followed each squad to the field training to ensure everyone knew what they were doing.

“Being rotated through leadership positions is a really good experience and helps us improve our leadership. Overall, the Basic Camp training is really good experience,” Livingston said.
